Lane launched the Chicago office of Volta in 2012. He provides strategic advice to law firm leaders, as well as helping to design and implement effective mentoring and coaching programs, with a particular focus on programs supporting high performing senior associates, new partners and diverse attorneys. In addition, Lane provides coaching, career counseling and career transition counseling services to partners, associates and professional development specialists. 

Lane has presented on talent management and legal industry issues at The Professional Development Institute (PDI), The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) Conference, Ms. JD, and was an organizer of, and presenter at, the 2008 NALP Diversity Summit. He has presented at numerous law schools – including Harvard, Georgetown, University of Chicago and Northwestern – on topics ranging from interview skills to career strategy.

Prior to joining Volta, Lane served as the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Mayer Brown, a role he assumed after spending several years as the firm's full-time Partner for Associate Development. During his tenure at Mayer Brown, Lane created the first in-house coaching/career counseling program at a US law firm, and in that role counseled hundreds of attorneys – from new associates to partners and practice leaders. In addition, he oversaw the transformation of the firm’s evaluation and compensation systems, facilitated the development of a US-wide training and development program and created a comprehensive first-year curriculum and coaching program aimed at improving integration and long-term success. Lane was a leader of Mayer Brown’s diversity initiative, which was the recipient of the Minority Corporate Council Association’s Thomas L. Sager Award in 2006.

Lane obtained his BA from Columbia College summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and his JD from Columbia University School of Law, where he was Managing Editor of the Columbia Law Review, a James Kent Scholar, winner of the James A. Elkins Prize in Constitutional Law and a recipient of the Jane Marks Murphy Prize for advocacy in clinical offerings. After law school, Lane clerked for Judge Walter J. Cummings of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, Lane is certified by the Behavioral Coaching Institute (BCI) as a master coach and is trained and certified in Mental Health First Aid by the National Council for Behavioral Health.

Lane is on the Board of Directors of the Third Coast International Audio Festival, an organization that supports producers of audio documentaries and radio stories, including those heard on This American Life, Radiolab and the Moth. He also supports Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre, where he previously served on the Board of Directors.
